"Mardi Gras Song" captures the merriment that happens on Fat Tuesday while "Hillbilly Blues Caribbean Rock & Roll" illustrates Les’ music with a description of the styles he has combined to create his unique sound. From blues to bluegrass, it’s all stirred up like a good gumbo.
Les has a lot of fun with "Justine," reminiscent of what might be heard in a Mississippi road house. The track features a rollicking saxophone section with Bryan Cumming (who wrote the song) and Pattie Cossentino, as well as keyboard work by Mark Jordan. Sparse instrumentation on "Running Buddies" allows the words to shine while Danny McCann’s haunting Dobro underscores this slice-of-life love story.
"Ink by the Barrel" reviews life in the news business as it once was. Les is joined by reporters with whom he once covered the news dubbed the “Mobile Mass Media Choir” for this project.
One of the biggest hits among Les’ fans, "The Camellia Grill" gets a new visit with fine accordion playing by Jeff Lisenby. Written after Les’ first late-night visit to a legendary New Orleans café, this song inspires visions of colorful waiters and strong coffee.
"Buy Your Way Out of the Blues;" "Magnolia Springs;" "I Want this Afternoon to Last;" "I Miss America;" John Hartford’s "Natchez Whistle;" Dick Feller’s "Orleans Parish Prison;" Leadbelly’s "Cotton Fields" and a gutsy, New Orleans-influenced version of the classic "House of the Rising Sun," with Randy Leago’s accordion playing, round out the CD.
The musicians on the CD are well-respected and have played with such artists as Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Kathy Mattea, Boots Randolph, Brenda Lee, Sha Na Na, and others.
The illustrious members of The Mobile Mass Media Choir are: Dick Hylton, Ron Reams, David Nihart, Daniel Lynch, Bud McLean, Gary Smith, Nick Panayioutou, Ray Farnell, and ex-officio member Jane Williamson.

Other highlights on the CD include Les’ versions of Robert Earl Keen’s hilarious "Happy Holidays, Y’all" (with vocal accompaniment by the Bayou Babes Holiday Chorale), Tammy Vice’s beautiful "What the King Didn’t Know" and a spoken word rendition of the famous "Yes, Virginia, There is A Santa Claus" letter featuring Caroline Stoker as Virginia.
The instrumental Wayfaring Stranger gives some of Les’ band members a chance to shine and "Christmas by the Bar-B-Que" puts some lighthearted blues in your Christmas stocking. The rocking "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" makes everyone glad to hear the news.
So forego that fruitcake for some crawfish and let Les Kerr take you to Christmas on the Coast!
